Spa circuit in Tenerife: what is it, what it includes, and why do it in the mountains.

Tenerife is not just a beach. At 1,500 meters above sea level, surrounded by Canary pines and at the foot of Teide, there is a different way to disconnect: a mountain spa circuit where the environment is as important as the water.

If you have never done a hydrothermal circuit or are not sure what to expect, this guide is for you.

What is a spa circuit and how does it differ from going to the spa.

A spa circuit, also called a hydrothermal circuit or thermal circuit, is a guided tour through different water and heat stations done in a specific order.

It is a wellness protocol where each station has a function and where the body responds progressively to temperature changes.

The key difference from a conventional spa: the circuit works the cardiovascular system, circulation, and nervous system through the alternation between heat and cold. The result is deeper than a relaxing bath: the body truly resets.

What does a hydrothermal circuit include: the main stations.

Interior view of a wooden sauna with warm lighting, benches at different heights, and a minimalist and relaxing design.

Although each establishment has its own sequence, a complete circuit usually includes these phases:

Finnish sauna.

The temperature ranges between 80 and 100 °C with low humidity. It is the ideal starting point to open the pores, relax deep muscles, and begin to raise body temperature. It is recommended to stay between 8 and 15 minutes.

Turkish bath or hammam.

Here the temperature is lower (between 40 and 50 °C) but the humidity rises to almost 100 %. The steam works on the respiratory tract and the skin. It is especially beneficial for those coming from a dry environment or outdoor activity.

Sanarium.

An intermediate space between the sauna and the Turkish bath: moderate heat with medium humidity. Ideal for those who do not tolerate extreme temperatures well and want the benefits without the intensity.

Jacuzzi and hydro massage.

Hot water with pressure jets acts on muscles, joints, and circulation. In the circuit, this phase serves to maintain body temperature between stations and work on specific areas: neck, back, legs.

Pebble paths and temperature contrasts.

Walking barefoot on stones activates foot reflexology and improves peripheral circulation. Temperature contrasts are the true heart of the circuit: they stimulate the immune system, reduce inflammation, and release endorphins.

Pool and relaxation area.

The circuit always ends with a recovery phase. The body needs time to return to its normal temperature and assimilate the benefits.

Why altitude enhances the effects of the spa circuit.

When you do a spa circuit at sea level, the body responds well. When you do it at 1,500 meters altitude, the context changes:

  • The air is purer and drier. This makes the respiratory system work more actively and the lungs respond better to the steam of the Turkish bath.
  • The atmospheric pressure is lower. The heart undergoes a different effort, and the temperature changes between stations generate a more marked cardiovascular response.
  • The natural environment reinforces the parasympathetic effect. The nervous system enters recovery mode more easily when there is no urban noise, traffic, or artificial stimulation. Just pine trees, mountain air, and silence.

The result: the same circuit lasts less time but generates a deeper sense of relaxation.

Indoor facilities of a spa circuit with a pebble path and water for the feet, surrounded by potted plants and loungers in the background.

The circuit at Hotel Spa Villalba is designed to take advantage of this context precisely.

Sauna, sanarium, and Turkish bath with progressive temperatures to adapt the body without straining it. Jacuzzi with pressure jets for neck, back, and legs, especially appreciated if you come from a hiking route or a day of cycling around Teide. Semi-covered pool with an outdoor area, surrounded by Canary pines: heated in winter, uncovered in summer. And pebble paths to close the circuit with real recovery time.

It is an adult-only space, uninterrupted. Quiet by design.

The circuit is available for both hotel guests and external visits in DayPass with Spa mode. You can book it independently or combine it with body treatments and massages.

How long does a spa circuit last?

It is advisable to reserve between 90 minutes and 2 hours to complete the circuit without haste. Each station needs its time for the body to respond. Hurrying is going halfway.

Practical tips before your visit.

  • Arrive on time. You will need to shower before entering the circuit.
  • Hydrate well. Heat dehydrates. Bring water and drink between stations.
  • Wear comfortable clothing. The circuit ends and it’s worth taking advantage of it.
  • Turn off your phone. It’s not mandatory. But you will appreciate it.
